Yesterday was a doozie. I think it's in the top three of my worst days ever. Holding my baby, listening to her cry and moan constantly for hours and not being able to do anything for her was complete misery.
Maci has peritonitis. The area where her dialysate goes to clean out the toxins, is inflamed. More info can be found here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0002311/ . It's very painful but the Nephrologist seems to think we caught it early. Antibiotics were started early yesterday so Maci was feeling better by yesterday afternoon. They took some of the fluid from her belly for a culture and cell count yesterday. The cell count confirmed the suspected peritonitis. The culture takes 24 hours or more to show any bacteria growth. So far, no growth but they are treating her with two types of antibiotics to cover the different types of bacteria. They will redraw fluid today for another cell count.
I'm very thankful for her nurse who called me at 4am to let me know what was going on and that Maci had spiked a fever. I left home for the hospital and being with Maci during those hours she was hurting made me feel better, even though there was nothing I could do. At least Maci knew I was with her.
Have I said lately just how much I love these nurses??? I want a lot of land to build HUGE houses on for my circle of nurses, practitioners and docs so we can all live close but not too close for comfort. Yanno like our own little neighborhood lol.
Earlier in the week, our training for the home dialysis machine was scheduled for next week and our machine for home, ordered. The on call nurse said yesterday that she didn't expect our training to be delayed with Maci's setback. I was like, whhhheeew! Moo obviously likes to remind us who's in charge; make progress and she's gonna slow things down lol.
Maybe THIS time the worst is behind us??
Maci on Wednesday, 3/7.
