Redneck or Frugal

Whichever one, I am saving $$$ money $$$!  I started using homemade laundry detergent, fabric softener, dishwasher detergent and spot/stain remover to save money.
So far I am pleased with everything with exception to the dishwasher detergent.  It hardened and I have to break it up before I can scoop out what I need to run the dishwasher.  I stored it, as directed, in an airtight container (Mason jar) and it still hardened.    I will still continue to use it because it does work.  I will add that I do not use glasses/drinkware so as far as spotting goes....I can't really speak to whether it works well on preventing spotting.

My "recipes":  (all ingredients were purchased at Walmart)

Fabric Softener

6 cups boiling water
2 cups hair conditioner
2 cups white vinegar
Mix hair conditioner with 6 cups of boiling water well, until conditioner is dissolved.
Add vinegar and mix well.
Allow to cool and store in a container of your choice. I had an empty fabric softener bottle and put the excess in a coffee creamer bottle.
Use 2 TBSP for each load of laundry.

I used a 15oz bottle of Suave Waterfall Mist fragrance $0.94 Walmart - but you can use whatever your preference for smell may be.  It's just shy of 2 cups but I don't feel that it made a difference.  The original recipe called for 3 cups white vinegar but the smell was a little strong for me even though the smell washes out.  I think I am getting the effect of the vinegar with the 2 cups vs 3.

About White Vinegar......Did You Know:
(All of which I have personally tested and are true)
  • Forgot that you left wet laundry in the machine and it now smells moldy? Pour a 1-2 cups of white distilled vinegar in the machine and rewash the clothes.  Hot wtaer recommended but I have used cold and it works.  If you prefer, you can rewash with detergent included.
  • Get cleaner laundry! Add about 1/4 cup white distilled vinegar to the last rinse. The acid in white distilled vinegar is too mild to harm fabrics, yet strong enough to dissolve the alkalies in soaps and detergents. Besides removing soap, white distilled vinegar prevents yellowing, acts as a fabric softener and static cling reducer, and attacks mold and mildew.
  • Prevent lint from clinging to clothes by adding 1/2 cup white distilled vinegar to the wash cycle.
  • Get stained white socks and dingy dishcloths white again. Add 1 cup white distilled vinegar to a large pot of water, bring it to a rolling boil and drop in the articles. Let soak overnight.
Laundry Powder

1 bar of Fels-Naptha
2c Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
2c Borax
1c Purex Crystals Laundry Enhancer (OPTIONAL)
1/2 c baking soda (OPTIONAL)

Grate bar of Fels-Naptha soap (measures about 1 1/2 cups)
Mix well with 2 cups Washing Soda and 2 cups Borax.
Store in air tight container.
Use 1 1/2 to 2 TBSP per load of laundry

TIP:  To get a finer grate on the Fels-Naptha, you can use a food processor or chopper to more finely grate before or after mixing.

I halved the recipe to try it out. I did also add Purex Crystals for a fragrance because I am a bit spoiled on having good smelling laundry.

The full recipe will wash approximately 44 loads of laundry, using 2 TBSP per load.  The ingredients costs less than $8 (without the optional ingredients).  However, you are not using the entire box of washing soda or Borax.  The price for one recipe is $2.92 (tax included).  Each load of laundry will cost you .07 per load!  Gain 68 loads, 11.76 (tax included) is 0.18 per load.  By using the homemade laundry powder you're saving almost 3 times what you'd pay for name brand.

I have a HE, front load washer and use this and I also wash Maci's clothes with it as well.
The recipe is a low sudsing detergent so based on the research I have done prior to making this, it is supposed to be easy on the washing drum.
Maci has never indicated to me that her skin was sensitive so since she was more than 6 months, I decided to try it and so far, so good.

Dishwasher Detergent

1 c Washing soda
1 c Borax
1/2 c KOSHER salt
1/2 c citric acid (you can use 16 unsweetened lemonade packets)
Mix together and store tightly covered in something like a Mason jar. Use one tablespoon per load.
TIP:  Substitue white vinegar to the rinse dispenser for spot removal and dave money there too!

I mixed up a stain remover but I haven't tried it yet for laundry purposes.  It does however make an AMAZING cleaner for stainless.  I honestly can't say what made me even try it as a cleaner but I put it in my sink and cleaned the recessed wording on the garbage disposal and also the faucet bade, handle and spout.  SHINE!!!!!!!!!!!!  I did the same for the bathroom and SHINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Magic" Cleaner:
One part Dawn
2 parts Hydrogen Peroxide
2 TBSP baking soda
Mix together in a bottle.  (I used an empty soap dispenser but you could use a spray bottle also).
Shake before each use and don't be alarmed if it bubbles.
I typically use a magic eraser for this type of cleaning but this is cheaper!  It's a liquid magic eraser.

Just thought I would share my newly discovered, money saving recipes!  Enjoy!

Maci is good.  The spitting up and vomiting had gotten better but no sooner had I began doing the dance of joy, she's started the puking again.  I had to change her clothes today.  :(  Her appointment with the GI is Thursday.  I can't wait to see what he has to say.  Therapy at home continues to go well and we still do our homework too.  She continues to gain weight!  Dialysis is going well.  The machine still alarms which wakes me up and drives me insane but it is what it is.  Maci has started smiling A LOT more frquently and there have been a few times that I KNOW she's laughed out loud.  She coos a lot more and so often it's almost like she responds to something said and it's quite funny.  She's so much fun!!!!!
