Maci has a pale optic nerve. The optic nerve, describing it as simply as I can, relays info from the eye (retina) to the brain. It basically serves as communication / translation for what you see.
When we saw the Ophthalmologist in May, she told us it was a "wait and see" situation. Maci was not following objects or visually responding to light but I was told that it could be a developmental delay and we would potentially know more at her next visit in 6 months. Her next visit is in 3 weeks.
Maci's therapists had noticed her lack of focus which prompted the lady thats over her early intervention to contact the gentleman over CHIP (Comprehensive Home Based Intervention Program), a program of the State of MS School for the Blind. Maci is NOT blind but her current level of vision is still unknown. After our meeting today to discuss the program I walked away with a lot of information regarding the history of the program, some "pointers" and information on the next steps involved in determining if Maci would even qualify for the program. Should she not qualify, it's actually a positive thing. Not qualifying would mean her vision is not affected to the significant level in which the services offered through the program would be necessary.
This vision stuff, added to dialysis and feeding hurdles has created a monster of an emotional roller coaster for me. It's mainly the wait and see part that I don't do well with because I can't plan! I try to be realistic AND hopeful.
We should know a bit more next month and in the meantime I will be practicing the tips given to me today.
I simply pray for what's best for Maci and the path that she is meant to travel. I am thankful that I get to enjoy this chaotic life with her.....even though I still have days where I scream and cry over this NOT being fair. It was said today that Maci is a blessing and that Rick and I were chosen to parent this blessing. I have to continue to remember this because it truly is what I believe in my heart. I'm keeping the faith, even through the unknown!
