A few people have asked if Maci's vision could possibly be corrected in the future with a corneal or retinal transplant. Unfortunately, no. Maci's vision impairment is from a "brain injury". When she lost over half of her blood volume at birth, her kidneys suffered and so did one small area of her brain along with damage to her optic nerve. Your optic nerve carries what the eyes see, to the brain for translation. Loss of blood flow to the occipital cortex results in cortical blindness and is a neurological problem. The area of her brain cannot be "transplanted" so therefore it is irreversible damage. That's pretty much the best way I can explain.
I have processed and progressed. I can now tell people about Maci's lack of vision without tears. My kid is going to continue to be amazing in her own little way. She will be even more of a hero to me for not only going through (what will be at least) 2 years of dialysis but for learning to do all the things normal kids do.....and doing it without sight!
Last night I read a blog that I follow. You may have seen the story of Malley Jane on Facebook. If not, you should check out the blog that Malley Jane's Mom, Janie, began writing after Malley Jane's passing and earning her angel wings. That family has been through IT.....and they remain hopeful and positive and continue to allow God to work in them and through them. Here is the link if you would like to check it out. http://www.malleyjane.com/a-bow--a-bible.html
The song that accompanied last night's blog update was so incredibly meaningful to me. During Maci's nightly prayers, one of the last things I say, thanking God, is for continuing to hold Maci in the palm of His hand. The song is powerful because of it's truth.
