Weekender Update

Maci is back on 24 hour dialysis.  I am not sure if I have mentioned that she was no longer getting breaks off dialysis.  She had originally been given a break for 12 hours and her BUN and Creatinine began rising so they gave her a shorter break of 8 hours. 
In addition to her BUN/Creatinine rising, she also became acidotic (An abnormal increase in the acidity of the body's fluids, caused either by accumulation of acids or by depletion of bicarbonates.).  The Nephrologist that is seeing her this week while Dr. Delos Santos is off is Dr. Matthew Eison.  Rick and I like him too.  Dr. Eison explained very well the bicarbs and acidosis process but I am not sure I could explain it here.....definately not as well as Dr. Eison did to me. 
Anyway, the plan is to keep her on 24 hour dialysis and increase the amount of fluid going into her belly that filters the junk out of the body that her kidneys aren't doing.  She is currently getting 45 mLs and again, needs to be up to 100 mLs to go home (along with several other factors but that one is the priority). 
Dr. Eison explained that the break and tolerating time off dialysis is all a trial and error and it's not a bad thing that she didn't tolerate the break right now.

Maci has pretty much stopped taking her bottle.  She might drink 5-9 cc's and then she stops eating so they had to put in another NG tube (tube in her nose).  It was taking her too long to eat and an infant begins burning calories after about 20 minutes of eating.  Nutrition is very important to her growth and getting better so they can't allow her to continue to burn calories and risk losing weight.  So, we let her eat what she will through the bottle and then after 20 minutes anything left is put down her tube. 

It's feeding time now, so off I go to cradle my love and see how much she will eat.  Her 11:00 feeding, she ate her entire 29 cc's through the bottle but at 2pm she had about 6 through the bottle.  She's the boss they keep saying so I am going to let her do her thing and just love her and cuddle her and kiss her in the meantime.  :)
